Hagner to present LC State’s annual Moore Honorary Lecture on Monday at noon

LEWISTON, Idaho – Travis Hagner will discuss “Developing a Virtual Constituency” for the 7th annual Moore Honorary Lecture on Monday, Oct. 2, at noon on the Lewis-Clark State College campus.

The event will be held both in person at Sacajawea Hall, Room 115, and on Zoom (Zoom ID 8448 9842 5613 and passcode 398322). The event is free and open to the public.

Hagner is an associate professor of political science at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, where he has taught since 2019. His research and discussion examines how the scope of political representation has evolved through the development of social media. He argues that there is a “virtual” constituency that exists outside an elected official’s physical constituency base. This virtual constituency provides time and resources (money). He measures their existence by looking at campaign donations that candidates received from outside their district and then breaks that down by candidates who had Twitter and did not have Twitter.

Hagner received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and his master’s from Appalachian State, and his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada Reno, all in political science. He teaches a variety of subjects at NIC, including American National Government, State and Local Government, and International Politics and Problems.

Those watching on Zoom will be on mute throughout the presentation, but can submit questions by typing them in the comments section.

The Moore Honorary Lecture honors former LC State political science professor Richard Moore and his contributions to the college. Moore worked at LC State for 27 years, 1978-2005, when he retired. He mentored several students and chaired the Faculty Senate and Faculty Association twice, the Social Sciences Division for eight years, and was interim chair for the Nursing & Health Sciences Division. He also served as acting dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The lecture is sponsored by the LC State Social Sciences Division.
