Music, gender, and sexuality topic of presentation at CAH

LEWISTON, Idaho - Tom Schumacher, local musician and music educator, will present QueerMusic: Gender and Sexuality – To Stonewall and Beyond, Friday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m. at the LCSC Center for Arts and History, as part of the Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate Speakers Series.

QueerMusic: Gender and Sexuality – To Stonewall and Beyond is a historical, multi-media exploration of LGBTQ musical artists.  Schumacher focuses on entertainment pioneers who were able to reveal their stories to a society that sought to reject that experience.

“Academic musicologists and historians of popular culture have almost entirely ignored the topic of LGBTQ music history,” said Schumacher. “This presentation seeks to provide opportunity to answer this timely question, ‘What is QueerMusic?’  It’s blues, jazz, cabaret, crooners, chanteuse, folk, protest, metal, glam rock, disco, synth pop, hip-hop - it's all here.”

Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate Speakers Series is brought to the Center for Arts & History through sponsorships from:  LCSC Continuing Education & Community Events; Shekinah Christian Community, and through grants from US Bancorp, the Idaho Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Admission is free, but donations are welcome.  Docent tours of the exhibit can be scheduled by calling the Gallery at 208.792.2243.
